Lolita’s Personality
Macaws are an excellent companion bird. They are incredibly affectionate and intelligent. They are the perfect addition to families with a range of members. They are easily bored and find different ways to entertain themselves if their owners do not interact with them enough. Macaws who aren't properly socialized may become aggressive and even bite. It is important that boundaries are clearly established so that the macaw does not feel threatened.
Blue and Gold Macaws, in general are active birds who love to play, interact and climb. They need to spend at least 2 to 3 hours a day outdoors to stimulate their minds and get physical exercise. They love playing games as well as listening to music and learning new tricks. They also enjoy going to the playgrounds and parks as well as hiking and going to local restaurants and bars. They are not just a wonderful pet, but they are also a wonderful companion for children.
The birds can be quite loud, despite their adoration for their mate. They can also be a nuisance to those who live nearby. They can emit ear-splitting screeches and loud calls which can be a nuisance for those who live in apartments or condos.
This species is also monomorphic. Females and males can be difficult to distinguish. For this reason, DNA testing is the only reliable method of determining sex. Once the birds' sex is established the breeding process can begin.
Blue and Gold Macaws, like all pets require training to learn commands and phrases. It is a lengthy process, and the pet's owner has to be patient and realize that this is a tough task. Positive reinforcement can help speed up the process, and correct any behavioral issues.
Lolita's care
For decades activists have been calling for the release of Lolita from performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. After the 1993 film Free Willy sparked public outrage over the reintegration of orca Keiko into the wild, conservationists hoped that Lolita would have a similar fate. Unfortunately, she didn't get a chance to return to the ocean.
The captors of Lolita, referred to as the Dolphin Company, have ignored veterinary recommendations and continued to put her at risk. They sabotage her health by forcing her to perform for tourists, putting too much stress on her with head-first dives, exposing her to chlorine, which causes her to lose weight and sabotaging her immune system. great green macaw keep her in a tank that is one-and-a-half times smaller her natural habitat.
Fortunately in 2022 the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with a group of Lolita advocates called Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe who view her as an ancestor in a plan that would eventually take her to open waters. The plan would have included a sanctuary on Washington's west coast where she could live for the rest of her life, receive medical attention and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen was expected to be hundreds of time larger than her Miami house and surrounded by ocean, not concrete tanks.
If the plan was successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki), might still be alive. In the wild, killer whales are highly social animals that bond with family members until they die. Lolita who has been alone at Seaquarium in isolation for 40 years, is now being released into the wild. Many activists across the country, including Ric O'Barry (former Flipper trainer), Empty The Tanks and Orca Network have urged her retirement from Seaquarium's stage and eventual release into the wild.

Lolita's Diet
As is the case with any species of animal captive, a gold and blue macaw's well-being is contingent on a healthy diet. These beautiful birds need high-quality food, as well as plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. A macaw that is well-fed in captivity can live up to 60 years. great green macaw requires plenty of space to fly and exercise.

The most recent update on the Friends of Lolita website states that she eats about 115 pounds of salmon, capelin, herring and squid every day.
The Miami Seaquarium has been criticized for the quality of the food they provide their killer whales, especially Lolita. The 57-year-old orca was taken from Puget Sound in 1970, and while the species is endangered in the wild, she is in an aquarium that some say is too small for her.
Lolita's Health
Lolita is beautiful, however her health continues to decline. Animal welfare groups have expressed concern about her and want to see her released back into nature. Lolita has been living at the Miami Seaquarium since 1970 and has been a tourist attraction for decades. She has been battling chronic illnesses and a crippling infection that has left her in a fragile condition.
The Dolphin Company, which now is the owner of the Miami Seaquarium and is owned by the Dolphin Company has not provided any information about Lolita's condition. Friends of Toki, a non-profit organization, has posted monthly updates on her health and well being on their website. These updates reveal that Toki is aging rapidly and her health is declining.
It is not known what health issues are affecting the orca, since her captor is not obliged to disclose the information. However, a database of necropsies taken from Sea World that was created by the Orca Project shows that kidney disease is a major factor in the deaths of captive orcas.
Despite the ongoing health concerns of Lolita many believe that she could be closer than ever to an unspoiled life. The new owner of the Seaquarium has expressed a commitment to removing the whale of her tank and into her home waters in the Pacific.
The move comes following years of public pressure and demands, including from PETA and PETA, which demanded that the Miami Seaquarium release Lolita into an ocean-side sanctuary where she can swim in the ocean, and possibly even be reunited with the orca believed to be her mother. Unfortunately these plans came late for the beloved whale, who died on Friday of what was believed to be a renal problem.
